Imagine returning home from a simple park outing with your 5-year-old daughter, who has a life-threatening chronic illness, only to watch armed police and child welfare workers burst through your door, remove her in minutes, and place her in foster care—all because you questioned a high-risk medication. That nightmare became reality for Joy Zuraff on March 6, 2024, in Navarre, Florida.
The two-part interview where Joy first shared her story aired on The Karis Project podcast (under the “In God We Trust” show) on May 6, 2025, hosted by Dale Richardson with co-host Stephanie Hudson. Titled “Ep. 43 – America Rising: Panhandle Pandemonium – A Mother’s Fight Against State-Sanctioned Theft!”, the full episode is available on Rumble: Watch the full interview here.
This interview and its public release occurred before Joy was placed under a court-ordered gag/protective order that now severely restricts her from discussing many aspects of her ongoing Santa Rosa County case.
Joy, a single mother also raising a 15-year-old daughter, called the removal of her daughter Kenlee—who has cystic fibrosis—a “medical kidnapping.” The raw emotion in her account, combined with the now-infamous bodycam footage, has ignited a firestorm of national attention.
Since the interview, the bodycam videos of the removal—showing armed police and DCF workers at Joy’s home—have gone viral, surpassing 1 million views across platforms.
The footage captures deeply disturbing moments: police officers smiling and grinning at each other during the removal, and one of the DCF workers repeatedly smiling and grinning throughout the entire process. Many viewers have described this behavior as unprofessional, callous, and chilling—especially given that a terrified child was being taken from her mother’s arms.
The apparent lack of empathy and casual demeanor in such a traumatic situation has provoked a massive national outcry, fueling accusations of systemic indifference and abuse of power within Florida’s child welfare system.
The videos have appeared on programs hosted by Dr. Drew and attorney Tom Renz, and have reportedly contributed to the termination of the lead DCF investigator involved. The footage has intensified long-standing criticism of Florida’s Department of Children and Families.

From South Dakota to the Panhandle: A Move for Healing
Joy relocated her family from South Dakota to Florida’s Panhandle in 2023 after a painful divorce and toxic family dynamics. She chose the area hoping the salt air would help loosen and clear the thick mucus that clogs Kenlee’s lungs—a recognized benefit for cystic fibrosis patients.
She arranged care ahead of time, starting with pulmonologist Dr. Gulner Com at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Pensacola. But during a September 2023 visit, Dr. Com reportedly refused ongoing treatment and insisted Kenlee be seen at an accredited cystic fibrosis center. Joy worried about such centers, citing past experiences where she felt serious medication reactions were ignored.
Joy learned from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that parents can legally choose any willing doctor—not just accredited facilities. She then connected with pulmonologist Dr. Lawrence J. Sindell in Mobile, Alabama, about 90 minutes away.
A Crisis Turns Catastrophic
In February 2024, Kenlee contracted rhinovirus and pneumonia, requiring a routine “CF tune-up”: stronger IV antibiotics, possible oxygen, and monitoring. Joy pushed back against certain proposals—especially Trikafta, a CFTR modulator—because Kenlee had suffered severe side effects from a similar drug (Orkambi) years earlier: headaches, stomach pain, insomnia, and eventual shortness of breath.
Joy contacted Vertex Pharmaceuticals directly and highlighted Trikafta’s late-2024 black box warning for potentially life-threatening risks.
She insisted earlier approaches had kept Kenlee far healthier than conventional “standard care,” which she described as relentless illness cycles. In Part 1 she said:
“before she was on their standard care of medications, and she was sick every single week… Nobody cared to listen.” (Part 1, 00:14:44 – 00:14:50 approx.)
That regimen had meant 13 consecutive antibiotics at one point, plus countless steroids.
The Day Everything Changed: March 6, 2024
After hospital disagreements, DCF stepped in. On March 6, 2024, armed police and DCF agents arrived at Joy’s door and removed Kenlee. Joy describes the scene as gut-wrenching: minimal time to explain, forced composure in front of her terrified child, and a swift separation.
The now-viral bodycam footage shows police officers smiling and grinning at each other, and one DCF worker repeatedly smiling and grinning throughout the process—behavior widely condemned as unprofessional and deeply insensitive during such a traumatic event.
Kenlee cycled through hospitals before landing in a medical foster home in Jacksonville—six hours away—turning visits into exhausting, expensive ordeals.

Life After Removal: A Mother’s Growing Alarm
Joy has voiced deep concerns since:
- Struggling to obtain full medical records from Kenlee’s current providers.
- Kenlee appearing scared on supervised Zoom calls, often looking to the foster parent before speaking.
- New nighttime fears from Kenlee about “monsters” at 3 a.m.—behavior unknown before removal.
- During supervised visits, spotting cigarette butts in an ashtray and a hot tub at the foster home. In Part 2 Joy warned:
“You can’t have smoke on your clothes or on your hair… And there was an ashtray full of cigarettes on her deck… people with cystic fibrosis can’t even be close enough to a hot tub where the droplets can get them.” (Part 2, 00:05:29 – 00:06:47 approx.)
- Uncertainty over vaccinations (including COVID/flu shots) given without her consent, plus blocked access to immunization records.
Contact remains tightly controlled, with threats to end calls if Joy doesn’t instantly redirect Kenlee’s innocent pleas to come home.

A Broken System? Joy’s Allegations Amid Broader DCF Criticism
Joy has alleged systemic failures: lawyers refusing to file her evidence (medical records, emails, evaluations ruling out Munchausen by proxy), misrepresentations in court, exaggerated claims about Kenlee’s condition (shifting lung transplant urgency), and crushing financial/emotional strain while support payments were redirected.
DCF is aggressively seeking termination of Joy’s parental rights and adoption, claiming she “hasn’t changed her way of thinking” despite some compliance and clean psych evaluations.
Joy’s frustration boiled over in Part 2:
“There is no medical freedom in Florida. This is a very communist state.” (Part 2, 00:16:22 – 00:16:28 approx.)
Recalling past ignored warnings, she declared in Part 1:
“They could have killed my daughter. I truly believe they would have killed my daughter.” (Part 1, 00:33:30 – 00:33:34 approx.)
The daily heartbreak cuts deepest:
“I can’t even imagine what Kenlee is going through… I used to get kisses and hugs from her every single day.” (Part 2, 00:12:31 – 00:12:45 approx.)
Florida’s DCF has faced years of criticism, including high-profile lawsuits, whistleblower allegations, and reports of overreach in medical cases (sometimes labeled “medical kidnapping”), failures to protect children in care, overcrowded or unsafe placements, and financial incentives tied to adoptions and terminations of parental rights. Critics argue the system sometimes prioritizes rapid permanency over family preservation, fueling ongoing debates about accountability and parental rights.
Critical Hearing and Prayer Vigil – February 9, 2026
A pivotal hearing is set for Monday, February 9, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. at the Santa Rosa County Courthouse (4025 Avalon Blvd, Milton, FL 32583). DCF seeks to terminate Joy’s parental rights—potentially ending her legal bond with Kenlee forever.
Supporters are organizing a peaceful prayer vigil outside the courthouse starting at 8:00 a.m. to pray for reunification, show solidarity, and demand accountability. If you can attend, your presence could send a powerful message that Joy and Kenlee are not alone.
